Purpose of the position: The Intern, High Impact Countries, provides programmatic support to the country teams focused on the grant management process and portfolio cross-cutting analysis.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is a public-private partnership committed to saving children’s lives and protecting people’s health by increasing equitable use of vaccines in lower-income countries. The Vaccine Alliance brings together developing country and donor governments, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the World Bank, the vaccine industry, technical agencies, civil society, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other private sector partners. Gavi uses innovative finance mechanisms, including co-financing by recipient countries, to secure sustainable funding and adequate supply of quality vaccines. Since 2000, Gavi has contributed to the immunisation of more than 1 billion children and the prevention of more than 17.3 million future deaths, helping to halve child mortality in 78 lower-income countries.
THE ROLE
The Country team unit works to achieve effective implementation of Gavi grants aimed at increasing immunisation coverage and equity, as well as financial sustainability in Gavi-eligible countries. This work is conducted in close collaboration with Gavi Alliance partners, country stakeholders, other development partners and the rest of the Gavi Secretariat.
The Senior Country Manager (SCM) and the Programme Manager (PM) work together on their dedicated country and play a stewardship role in ensuring Gavi resources are used wisely to achieve immunisation outcomes.
The Intern, High Impact Countries will work in close collaboration with the SCM and the PM and provide key programmatic support in conducting or ensuring completion of the various steps of the grant management process, managing risk and key relationships, and closely monitoring Gavi-funded programmes. S/he will also provide portfolio cross-cutting analysis to advance cross-country learning.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
Administrative Areas:
- Support on core Programme Manager work with internal processes for effective grant management across all 5 High Impact countries.
- Support on Senior Programme Assistant work to prepare and facilitate internal approval requests and manage partner contracts.
- Support communication, planning and preparations for CPD engagements at World Health Assembly, including HIC segment hosted event, preparation of briefing materials and talking points, and scheduling.
Technical Areas:
- Contribute to the development of the learning agenda for subnational engagements across High Impact countries.
- Document success stories/lessons learnt across High Impact countries (e.g. Mashako Plan and Kinshasa Declaration (DRC), Sustainable Development Goals Performance Fund (Ethiopia), U-WIN Health Systems Strengthening (India), State Health Systems Strengthening Memorandum of Understanding (Nigeria), and National Immunisation Support Project (Pakistan).
- Support the SCMs and PMs to follow up on recent in-country Alliance Partners retreat recommendations and implementation across High Impact Countries.

Qualifications
- Academic
- Minimum bachelor’s degree in public health, health economics, public or business administration, social sciences, or other relevant field or equivalent, related training or experience
- Work Experience
- Minimum of 1 years’ previous office experience.
- Experience in large, cross-functional teams working across diverse stakeholders within complex contexts.
- Work experience in diverse settings (especially of the High Impact countries – DRC, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria and Pakistan) an asset.
- Skills/Competencies
- Advanced writing competency: Ability to develop, write and convey clear messaging including technical information to short deadlines.
- Proactive problem solver: Ability to make decisions and operate independently as well as judgement to know when to seek guidance.
- Organization and multi-tasking: Strategic thinker, ability to multi-task, manage and track many active priorities in parallel; judgement to prioritise between multiple important tasks but not drop other tasks; highly organized and structured, good planner with a high level of attention to detail; sand project/programme management.
- Effective communicator: Delivers clear, concise and coherent messages – written and oral – adapted to intended audience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills: Models positive team behaviours that foster teamwork and trust, both internally and externally; highly self-motivated with ability to work in a fast-paced / high-pressure environment with tight timelines; multi-cultural sensitivity; and team player.
- Digital skills and information management: Know-how in record keeping (e.g. proper handling of records and systems to preserve institutional memory, including correspondence logs, office filing and reference systems, etc.)
Languages
- Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
- Fluency in written and spoken French is highly desirable.
