Join The IMF’s Economist Program (EP)
Are you a young economist with a passion for global impact? The International Monetary Fund (IMF) invites recent PhD graduates and those close to completing their PhD to join the Economist Program (EP), an exciting initiative designed to kick-start your career in the world of economics. As part of the EP, you’ll get hands-on exposure to a diverse range of IMF work, allowing you to apply your research and analytical skills to essential policy issues that affect our 190 member countries.
What’s in Store for You?
The EP offers a comprehensive three-year experience, providing you with a deep understanding of the IMF’s functions. During this period, you’ll be part of economic teams working on regional and country-specific surveillance, fiscal and monetary matters, balance of payments, debt, and related challenges. This isn’t a traditional trainee role; right from the start, you’ll be entrusted with real responsibilities, such as policy development, operational work, research, and teaching.
By the end of the program, we hope you’ll be inspired by our work and choose to continue your journey as a long-term IMF economist, contributing to global economic stability and growth.
Who Should Apply?
To be eligible for the EP, you need to:
– Be a recent PhD graduate or be within one year of completing your PhD in a relevant field.
– Be a national of one of our IMF member countries.
– Be under the age of 34 when you join the IMF EP program.
How to Apply?
The application process for the EP opens annually in late September, as indicated on the IMF Career Site .
Shortlisted candidates will undergo a selection process comprising several stages, including:
1. Preliminary Interview: A 30-40-minute discussion about your research paper and your understanding of economic topics related to IMF’s work.
2. Submission of Documents: This includes your university transcript, three academic references, and a research paper or dissertation chapters.
3. Panel Interview: An in-person interview with senior IMF economists to assess your analytical abilities, communication skills, and knowledge of economic subjects.
