The Academy Scholars Program at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies is a prestigious opportunity for recent PhD recipients and doctoral candidates in the social sciences. The program identifies and nurtures outstanding scholars at the beginning of their academic careers. The selected Academy Scholars exhibit resourcefulness, initiative, and originality in their research, which spans traditional disciplinary boundaries and addresses comparative, transnational, or domestic issues. The program aims to build a diverse and inclusive community of scholars dedicated to innovative and interdisciplinary research.
Appointment Details:
- Duration: Two-year in-residence postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA.
- Stipend: $80,000 per year.
- Benefits: Substantial financial and research assistance, mentorship from Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, and opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary activities.
Eligibility:
- Open to PhD recipients or doctoral candidates in the social sciences.
- Candidates must have received their PhD within two years of the August 1, 2025, start date.
- Advanced doctoral candidates nearing dissertation completion must provide degree conferral documentation by June 30, 2025.
- Previous Harvard postdoctoral fellows are ineligible.
Terms:
- Five to six scholars are selected annually.
- Appointments must commence by the fall following the fellowship offer.
- A one-time leave of up to 12 months may be requested between the first and second year for tenure-track teaching appointments.
- No other funding, awards, or obligations may be accepted during the fellowship.
