Purpose of the Scheme
This scheme aims to support outstanding individual researchers with excellent research proposals and to promote public understanding and engagement with the humanities and social sciences. Successful applicants will be freed from their normal academic and administrative commitments for 6 to 12 months to devote to completing a major piece of research. Additionally, the Academy expects a clear commitment to public engagement and communication of research outcomes during the Fellowship period.
Scope of the Award
Awards are judged on the quality of the research proposed and the applicant’s ability to communicate with a broad audience. Applicants should demonstrate how their program will advance understanding in their subject area and identify strategic priorities in the social sciences and humanities.
Eligibility
Applicants must be employed at a UK-based university, Higher Education institution, or Independent Research Organisation. The scheme primarily supports mid-career scholars but is open to early-career, established researchers, and those postdoctoral or equivalent research stages. Eligibility is determined by the applicant’s contribution to their field and their capacity as an excellent communicator. Generally, applicants should be within 15 years of receiving their doctorate. Allowances are made for career breaks and for established researchers without doctorates within 15 years of their first academic appointment.
Level of Award
Fellowships are covered under the Full Economic Costing (FEC) framework, with the Academy contributing 80% of this figure. The salary contribution for the Mid-Career Fellow is capped at £80,000, with the total value of an award not expected to exceed £152,000. Awards can last from a minimum of six months to a maximum of twelve months.
