The Women & Gender Constituency (WGC) is thrilled to announce the application period for the 2024 Gender Just Climate Solutions Awards! We invite grassroots organizations, activists, and women-led and gender equality groups working on climate change issues worldwide to apply.
Application Deadline: Sunday, July 21st, 2024, 23:59 CEST
Eligibility:
- Projects must have been operational for at least one year.
- Only non-governmental initiatives are eligible.
- The initiative must fit within one of the three award categories.
About the WGC: Established in 2009, the Women & Gender Constituency (WGC) is one of the nine stakeholder groups of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Comprising 33 women’s and environmental civil society organizations, the WGC ensures women’s voices and rights are central to the UNFCCC processes for a sustainable and just future.
Award Background: Launched in 2015, the Gender Just Climate Solutions Awards highlight real solutions for a more just, equal, and healthy planet. Previous winners include women-owned energy cooperatives, advocacy for women’s land tenure rights, and ethnic women-led reforestation projects.
Award Categories:
- Technical Climate Solutions: Gender-responsive technologies like water, renewable energy, food production, digitalization, and waste reduction.
- Non-Technical Climate Solutions: Focus on behavioral change, mutual learning, skills sharing, and capacity strengthening.
- Transformational Climate Initiatives: Address governance, institutional or societal change, and challenge patriarchal norms.
Evaluation Criteria: Projects will be assessed on their contributions to:
- Women’s Rights and Gender Equality: Equal access to benefits, alleviating women’s workload, empowerment, and promoting democratic rights.
- Climate Resilience: Local leadership, self-sufficiency, and contributions to climate mitigation and adaptation.
- Scaling-up and Transfer: Replicability, interlinkages with cross-cutting issues like peace-building, natural resource management, and health.
Selection & Award: An international jury will select three winning projects (one per category), each receiving:
- A monetary prize of 5,000 euros.
- Travel expenses for one person to attend the Award ceremony at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
- A mentoring program offered by WECF and WGC members, in partnership with the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN).
Up to 20 nominated projects will be featured in the Gender and Climate Solutions publication, distributed at COP29 and published on the WGC and WECF websites.
