Secretary-General’s Global Call for Nominations: Expanding and Diversifying Leadership in UN Peacekeeping and Political Missions
The United Nations Secretary-General has launched a Global Call for nominations to expand and diversify the pool of Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSGs), Deputy Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (DSRSGs), and Special Envoys in Peacekeeping Operations and Special Political Missions. This initiative seeks exceptional leaders with the expertise, competencies, skills, values, and behaviors necessary to guide the United Nations’ complex field missions.
Objective of the Global Call
- Advance gender parity and geographical diversity at the highest levels of United Nations field missions.
- Strengthen leadership and effectiveness of UN missions by broadening and diversifying the pool of candidates.
Nomination and Application Process
- Deadline: July 15, 2024.
- Eligibility: Member States, regional, international, and non-governmental organizations, and individuals.
- Submission Guidelines:
- Entities are requested to submit a “parity+ list” of up to four nominees, ensuring an equal or greater number of women candidates.
- Member States may nominate an additional candidate from an underrepresented region (of a different nationality) to enhance geographical diversity.
- Self-nominations are also accepted and welcomed.

Review and Selection
- Internal Review: Candidates meeting the minimum requirements will be included in the SRSG/DSRSG/Special Envoy pool.
- Competitive Selection: Only those deemed suitable for specific posts, as vacancies arise, will be invited to participate in a competitive selection process.
